Based on both the play by Josefina López and the 2002 film starring America Ferrera, Real Women Have Curves is the story of Ana, a child of Mexican immigrants in 1980’s Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. The only one in her family to be born in the states, Ana wants to leave behind her immigrant neighborhood and head to college, but her mother Carmen stands in her way, insisting she get married, have children, and stay helping her sister at the their garment factory. While working at the factory after graduating, Ana must confront head on the struggles and dangers faced by the undocumented women around her, and the privilege she has taken for granted as a citizen. It’s a compelling story of family duty and self discovery that resonates even more strongly today than ever before.
